Paul Newman’s death at the age of 83 doesn’t come as much of a surprise, given multiple reports that the actor was losing his battle with cancer and had decided to return home for his last days: a sad but dignified end for one of Hollywood’s great elder statesmen. Newman brought a touch of authenticity to everything he did, even salad dressing and car racing — making him a believable working-class hero for the ’60s and ’70s, the everyman who will not be pushed too far, in Roger Ebert’s words.
It’s remarkable to realize how long he’s been around — check out his bow-tied East of Eden screen test with James Dean for further evidence — and even more remarkable to look back on his legacy: The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid… If you don’t have time to watch one of his films, especially one of his classic team-ups with Robert Redford, enjoy these clips instead — an eclectic mix in tribute to an eclectic man.
NewTeeVee’s latest project, launched in June 2008, is NewTeeVee Station, an editorially-driven guide to quality online video. Want to find something good to watch? Want to get the lowdown on something all the kids are talking about, like “Soulja Boy” or combining Mentos and Diet Coke? Want to meet the rising stars of the new age of television before they get huge? NewTeeVee Station is your cheat sheet, cataloging the world of web video with an engaging voice and a critical eye. It’s also a community site, giving you increased power to express what you like, what you don’t, and what else you want to watch.

Paul Newman is a legend for his work in movies, and he’s a stud for all his work outside of movies
