Soulja Boy has cashed in on the new media hip-hop scene in a huge way and is making music moguls rethink how they manage and market artists. His debut single, Crank That, is the No. 1 digital download of all time and and has enjoyed weeks on the Billboard ringtone chart.
It was Soulja’s ingenious YouTube presence that caused a national dance sensation. His own videos, including the extremely informative and brilliant instructional dance video, have tens of millions of views. But Soulja’s real impact can be seen in the thousands of fans videos. There’s everyone from presidential candidates to the Texas Longhorns to those famous dancing Filipino inmates cranking dat to Soulja’s jam, not to mention the hordes of webcam crankers.
But the fan response goes much farther, with numerous remixed music video mashing up the hip-hop digital hit with television touchstones of Soulja’s generation. Sponge Bob Square pants singing the song has an impressive 38 million views as of this post. You can also find Winnie the Pooh, Dora the Explorer, Alvin and the Chipmunks (complete with high-pitched vocals), The Simpsons, Mario, and Superman (of course) all cranking dat.
