A high school drama told in 90-second bits from April to June 2007, with compelling writing and directing by creative producers Big Fantastic (the creators of Sam Has 7 Friends). Bankrolled by former Disney CEO Michael Eisner’s Vuguru, Prom Queen racked up 15 million views over its 12-week run on MySpaceTV. Although its sequel, Summer Heat, failed to achieve the same ratings heights, the series’s success signaled an industry-wide move towards sponsored web series targeted at a young audience — a trend that continues today with shows like Sofia’s Diary. The ultimate surprise at the end of Prom Queen is the discovery that web series are, if nothing else, a guaranteed way of getting teenage eyeballs for advertisers.
