Controversial and medium-defining, the interactive narrative phenomenon that began as a YouTube hoax gained more notoriety for being a fictional series than it did for its unique storytelling format. But once fans got over the shock of discovering that Bree, Daniel and her friends and family were actors, they continued to watch, and lonelygirl15 remains one of the most popular and controversial web series, well, ever. The titular LonelyGirl died at the end of Season 1, but even after the departure of lead actress Jessica Rose, the series continues, and is currently in production on its third season. Had it never been created, it is nearly impossible to imagine where online video would be today.
